Why I Chose Punch Needle Embroidery?

In the spring of 2022, after being forced to leave Ukraine due to the war, I found myself in Bulgaria, completely unaware that I would start sewing — let alone embroidering in the punch needle embroidery technique.

My professional background is in web development, with an additional passion for ceramics. Yes, quite an unexpected combination! In 2016, after being forced to leave Crimea due to the russian occupation and facing separation from my parents, I found solace in creativity — specifically, working with clay. Although, to be honest, art and design have always been a part of me. Besides web development, I also worked in graphic design, but ceramics became my true sanctuary. I taught myself to throw pottery on the wheel, and eventually, I opened my own ceramics studio in Kherson.

But then, on February 24, 2022, war began. My son and I found ourselves in occupied Kherson. Once again, I had to leave everything behind and escape into the unknown.

How Did I Discover Punch Needle Embroidery?

Once in Bulgaria, I deeply felt the need for creative expression again. Only beauty, color, texture, and the process of creating something unique could distract me — even if just for a moment — from the terrifying reality. Ceramics, however, was no longer an option — setting up a new studio in a foreign country was almost impossible.

So, I buried myself in research, searching for something that would bring me joy, ignite my creativity, and allow me to lose myself in the process. I kept asking myself:

  • What could bring me peace and inspiration?
  • What could capture my attention so fully that I’d forget about the outside world?
  • Which art form would allow me to create something meaningful and unique?

That’s how I discovered punch needle embroidery — a fascinating technique that combines textile, texture, and artistic expression.

What is Punch Needle Embroidery?

Punch needle embroidery is one of the oldest embroidery techniques, now experiencing a modern revival. This method has existed for centuries, but today it has become a trendy and innovative form of textile art.

How Does Punch Needle Embroidery Work?

Punch needle embroidery is done using a special hollow needle that allows the thread to be looped through the fabric, creating raised, textured designs. Instead of stitching traditionally, the needle forms small loops, adding dimension and depth to the fabric.

Why Did Punch Needle Embroidery Capture My Heart?

The first time I held a punch needle, I felt something incredible — as if I were working with clay again. In ceramics, I carved delicate patterns into the clay, shaping the design by removing material and playing with negative space. Each cut added depth and texture, transforming a simple clay piece into an intricate, lace-like structure. Punch needle embroidery gives me a similar sense of craftsmanship and creativity. Instead of carving clay, I now ‘sculpt’ with thread, creating raised textures and intricate motifs on fabric. Both techniques allow me to explore the balance between solid form and openwork, precision and spontaneity, structure and softness.

This embroidery technique became a new form of sculpting for me — instead of clay, I now “shape” soft, textured surfaces, playing with light, depth, and contrast. Punch needle embroidery is a tactile art form, something you don’t just see — you feel it with your fingertips, just like ceramic reliefs.

What Makes Punch Needle Embroidery So Special?

  • A Meditative Creative Process
The rhythmic motion of the needle has an almost hypnotic effect — like deep breathing or the sound of rain. You immerse yourself in the process, focusing on each loop, feeling the fabric transform in your hands. It’s the perfect technique for relaxation — a moment where you can forget time and simply create.
  • Rich Texture & Depth
Punch needle embroidery is more than just stitching — it’s true textile art. The needle allows you to create 3D, tactile patterns that look dynamic and visually stunning. Unlike traditional embroidery, which can be flat, punch needle designs feel alive, adding dimension to fabric — just like sculpted clay.
  • Endless Design Possibilities
From minimalist geometric patterns to intricate artistic compositions, punch needle embroidery lets you bring any idea to life. It’s like painting — with thread instead of paint. You can create abstract designs, ethnic motifs, floral compositions, and even full-scale textile paintings.
  • Minimal Tools, Maximum Impact
One of the reasons I fell in love with punch needle embroidery is its simplicity and accessibility. You don’t need expensive equipment or complicated techniques to start. Just a needle, fabric, and thread — and yet the results can look like high-end, professionally crafted textile art.
  • Faster Than Traditional Embroidery
Unlike classic embroidery, where each stitch takes time, punch needle embroidery allows you to cover large areas quickly. That means more freedom to experiment, create, and see results faster.

FAQ: Punch Needle Embroidery

What is punch needle embroidery and how is it different from traditional embroidery?

Punch needle embroidery is a unique textile technique where loops of thread are pushed through fabric using a special hollow needle, creating a raised, textured effect. Unlike traditional embroidery, which involves stitching directly onto the fabric, punch needle designs have a more three-dimensional, tufted appearance.

What materials do I need to start punch needle embroidery?

To begin, you’ll need:

  • A punch needle (sizes vary depending on the thread used)
  • Monk’s cloth or other loose-weave fabric
  • Embroidery floss, yarn, or cotton thread
  • A sturdy embroidery hoop or frame to keep the fabric tight

Is punch needle embroidery difficult to learn?

Not at all! It’s actually one of the easiest embroidery techniques for beginners. The process is repetitive and relaxing, making it great for both beginners and experienced crafters. Unlike traditional embroidery, where precise stitches are needed, punch needle is more forgiving and allows for quick progress.

How long does it take to complete a punch needle embroidery project?

The time required depends on the size and complexity of the design. Small projects like coasters or wall art can take a few hours, while larger designs (such as my embroidered bags) may take several days to complete.

How do I care for punch needle embroidery items?

For wall art or decorative pieces: Keep away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
For embroidered bags or accessories: My embroidery technique has been adapted for durability. The threads are carefully secured, making them resistant to wear. To keep your bag in top condition, simply spot clean with a damp cloth and avoid prolonged soaking.
